Over the last few years I can’t help but notice an overarching theme of oversized and baggy clothing. Maybe it’s my early 2000’s skinny girl trauma talking, but what gives? I personally love a more tailored style and fitted look. I’ve always felt that the baggy and oversized look when not done correctly adds weight to my 5’9 athletic frame. I had to dig deeper to understand why this was happening, and am I the only one who hasn’t jumped on the bandwagon?

What I found was there really wasn’t one answer for the trend toward oversized styles, but it stems from a mix of cultural, social, and economic factors. Here are some key reasons:

1. Comfort and Practicality Post-Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic led to a significant change in daily routines, with many people working from home and prioritizing comfort. This shift made relaxed, roomy clothing more appealing and acceptable in various settings.Designers responded by creating collections featuring loose silhouettes, soft fabrics, and elasticated waistbands, reflecting the new emphasis on comfort in fashion .Harper's BAZAAR

2. Rejection of Traditional Beauty Standards

Oversized clothing challenges the long-standing fashion ideal that clothes must accentuate a slim, "ideal" body shape. The newer generation, especially Gen Z, often favors self-expression over body-conscious fashion, rejecting unrealistic or gendered body norms.

3. Anti-fashion and “Normcore” Movements

There's been a broader movement rejecting fast trends and "trying too hard." Oversized, minimalist, or even “unfashionable” choices (like dad sneakers and baggy jeans) fit into the aesthetic of looking effortless, ironic, or detached from consumerist pressures.Oversized clothing allows individuals to express themselves without conforming to traditional fashion norms. For Generation Z, in particular, wearing oversized garments is a way to stand out and showcase personal style. This trend aligns with a broader movement toward self-expression and authenticity in fashion .The Line Out

4. Nostalgia : Y2K and '90s Revival

Fashion often cycles through trends, and the current popularity of oversized clothing draws inspiration from the 1990s and early 2000s. Baggy jeans, oversized jackets, and relaxed fits were staples of those decades, and their resurgence reflects a nostalgic return to those styles .

5. Gender Fluidity and Inclusivity

Oversized fashion blurs traditional gender lines, offering a more inclusive approach to clothing. By moving away from body-hugging silhouettes, oversized garments provide options that are accessible and appealing to a broader range of body types and gender identities .BLESZD

6. Sustainability and Slow Fashion

The oversized trend also intersects with sustainability efforts in fashion. Larger, versatile pieces can be styled in multiple ways, reducing the need for excessive consumption. Additionally, the popularity of vintage and second-hand oversized clothing supports more sustainable shopping habits .The Line Out

In essence, the oversized trend reflects a mix of social change, nostalgia, rebellion against norms, and a prioritization of comfort and individual expression. It's a cultural shift as much as it is a stylistic one.

My research surprised me, some of it made a lot of sense but I was surprised to see how much influence Gen Z attitudes and opinions have over something like macro fashion trends. Although not for me, I respect it. I still refuse to wear something that gives me less shape and makes me look 20 lbs heavier.
